What is Assisted Rental Housing?

Assisted rental housing, also known as subsidized housing or public housing, provides decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Assisted rental housing comes in all sizes and types, from scattered single-family houses to high-rise apartments for seniors. Nationwide, there are about 1.3 million families living in Assisted rental housing neighborhoods, which are managed by some 3,300 housing authorities. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administers federal aid to local housing authorities that manage assisted rental housing. HUD also furnishes technical and professional assistance in planning, developing, and managing these developments.

What are housing choice vouchers?

Housing choice vouchers allow low-income families to choose and lease privately owned rental housing that’s safe, decent, and affordable.

What is NRHA’s role in assisted rental housing and housing choice vouchers?

NRHA’s Housing Operations division has developed and administers nearly 4,000 assisted rentals in 16 Norfolk neighborhoods, and provides a variety of support services to help residents of assisted rental housing improve their lives. The division also manages about 2,500 housing choice vouchers.
